Year of death: 1823.7.20 (6/13/1823) Year of birth: Meiwa 1 (1764) A scholar of Japanese classics from the Edo period. His family name was Makisha. He was the second son of Ishizuka Shibaemon, a village headman from Hosoda Village, Shikichi County, Totomi Province (Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture). In 1786 he became a disciple of Naoyama Shinryu, a village headman from Otani Village in the same province, and in 1789 he became a disciple of Motoori Norinaga from Matsusaka. Norinaga trusted him so much in his later years that he accompanied him to Kyoto. He added empirical evidence to Norinaga's research into the ancient Japanese language, and wrote works on kana usage such as Kogon Seido Ko (1801) and Kanazukai Okuyamado (1798 preface), as well as commentaries on classics. At the time, "Seidakuko" was criticized as "the book that agrees with Norinaga's theory is considered correct, and anything that disagrees with his theory is considered incorrect even if it is an ancient book. Isn't this a serious case of slandering the ancients?" (Arakida Kyuuro, "Shinano Manroku"), but it was able to shed light on many new facts about the use of Man'yōgana. <References> Koyama Tadashi, "Research on Ishizuka Tatsumaro" (Robert Campbell) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
