…This family is considered to be closely related to spider flies, but in many respects it retains more typical Dipteran features than spider flies, such as a large number of ommatidia in the compound eyes, well-developed wings, and a flat thorax and abdomen. Most of them are external parasites of bats, but in the females of the Ascodipterinae subfamily, they live as internal parasites, burrowing into the subcutaneous tissue of bats in the form of a maggot with no wings or legs. They are distributed from the tropics to the subtropics, with the distribution boundary roughly coinciding with the 10°C isotherm in winter, but in Europe and Japan they are distributed down to a few degrees lower. …

…この科はクモバエに近縁なグループと考えられているが，複眼の個眼の数が多いこと，よく発達した翅をもつこと，胸部や腹部が扁平でないことなど，多くの点でクモバエより一般的な双翅目の特徴をよく保持している。多くはコウモリに外部寄生するが，Ascodipterinae亜科に属するものの雌では，翅も脚も脱落したうじのような形でコウモリの皮下組織に入り込み，内部寄生者のような生活を行う。熱帯から亜熱帯にかけて分布し，その分布の境界は冬の10℃の等温線にほぼ一致するが，ヨーロッパや日本ではさらに数度低いところまで分布している。…
