This is one of the "artisan poetry contests" created in the Middle Ages, in which artisans are divided into two groups and compete in poetry, with a judge deciding which is better. It follows the "Tohokuin Artisan Poetry Contest" (1214) and the "Tsuruoka Hojoe Artisan Poetry Contest" (1261), and is thought to have been created in February 1494 (Meiō 3) for the occasion of the seventh anniversary memorial service for Karakumon'in Nobuko (Empress Gohanazono), the mother of Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado. There are 64 poems, with the themes "Flowers" and "Recollections," and each has 16 poems, with 32 types of artisans and a kanjin saint as the judge. The composition is thought to be based on the "Vimalakirti Sutra," and the paintings show dynamic depictions, making it an original work while being aware of the two previous works.
