…The name comes from penus (meaning "stored food"). Along with the Lares, they were worshipped as guardian deities in households, and there were also Penates (Penates publici) as guardian deities of the state, which was a collection of houses. The latter were believed to have been brought to Italy by Aeneas, the founder of Rome, from Troy, and their temple was on the Palatine Hill in Rome.
