Today, the term eaves refers to a lean-to roof used to protect against rain, but originally it referred to the space surrounding the main building, the main part of a palace. The term first appeared in documents from the late Nara period. Until the early Heian period, gabled houses were the norm and were called maya, which were considered more prestigious than azumaya, which were hipped-roofed buildings. Due to their structure, gabled buildings generally had two beams (around 6m), making it difficult to create large spaces. Therefore, eaves were installed on the front and back or on the left and right sides of the building to expand the interior space. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
