…A geared railway invented by the Swiss Roman Abt (1850-1933). It is used for steep mountain railways. Two or three steel strips with sawtooth teeth are laid in the center of the left and right rails, with the teeth offset in an alternating manner, and the gears on the bottom of the car engage with them to generate driving force. It is possible to climb and descend steep slopes that would cause a normal railway (adhesion type) to slip, and some have a maximum slope of 250‰. In Japan, it was used from 1893 to 1963 on the Shinetsu Main Line between Yokokawa and Karuizawa, about 8 km long (maximum slope 67‰). …
