Karl XIV Johan

King of Sweden and Norway. Reigned 1818-44. Founder of the current Bernadotte dynasty. Born in Pau in southern France. Became a non-commissioned officer at the age of 17, achieved many military feats and was promoted quickly. Married Désirée, a relative of Napoleon, and became a marshal in 1804 and Duke of Pontecorvo in 1806. He led various campaigns as the emperor's right-hand man. In 1810, the Swedish parliament chose him as the heir to the throne, entrusted with recapturing Finland from Russia, and he changed his French name, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, to Karl Johan.

スウェーデン，ノルウェー王。在位1818‐44年。現ベルナドット王家の開祖。南フランスのポー出身。17歳で下士官となり，武功が多く昇進も早く，ナポレオンの親族デジレと結婚，1804年に元帥，06年イタリアのポンテコルボ公となり，皇帝の右腕として各地遠征を行った。10年にスウェーデン国会で，ロシアからのフィンランド奪回を託されて王位継承者に選ばれ，フランス名ベルナドットJean‐Baptiste Bernadotteをカール･ヨハンと改名した。
