A town in Shibata County in the southern part of Miyagi Prefecture, in the middle reaches of the Shiroishi River, a tributary of the Abukuma River. The main settlement is a post town on the Ou Kaido road, and along the Tohoku Main Line, the townscape has developed on both banks of the Shiroishi River. Rice is the main industry, but field crops are also practiced. Manufacturing is thriving. It is also the trailhead for Mount Zao. 宮城県南部,阿武隈川の支流白石川中流部の柴田郡の町。中心集落は奥州街道の宿場町で,東北本線に沿い,町並みは白石川の両岸に発達。米作を中心とするが畑作も行う。製造業が盛ん。蔵王山への登山口でもある。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。24.99km2。2万3530人(2010)。
