A port city in eastern Ukraine. Population 492,000 (2001). Located in Donets Oblast, the easternmost part of Ukraine, at the mouth of the Kalimius River, which flows from north to south through the Donets Hills and empties into the Sea of ​​Azov. Founded in 1778, it was known as a shipping port for Ukrainian wheat and coal in the 19th century. It was renamed Zhdanov in 1948 after A. A. Zhdanov, a politician from the area who died in that year, and was called by that name until 1989, but reverted to its original name after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is part of the Donets Industrial Zone and has a coastal industrial zone. It has industries such as the Azovstal Steelworks, large machine assembly, ship repair, chemicals, coke manufacturing, food processing, and light industry. It is also an educational and resort city with the Metallurgical University, local museum, ethnographic museum, and theater, and is known as a mud bath resort.

ウクライナ東部の港湾都市。人口49万2000(2001)。ウクライナ東端のドネツ州にあり、ドネツ丘陵を北から南に流れてアゾフ海に注ぐカリミウス川河口に位置している。1778年に建設され、19世紀にはウクライナの小麦や石炭の積出し港として知られた。当地出身で1948年に死亡した政治家A・A・ジダーノフの名にちなみ、同年ジダーノフ市と改称し、89年までその名でよばれたが、ソ連崩壊によりもとの名に戻った。ドネツ工業地帯の一部をなし、臨海工業地帯を有する。アゾフスターリ製鉄所をはじめ、大型機械組立て、船舶修理、化学、コークス製造、食品加工などの工業、軽工業がある。また、冶金(やきん)工業大学、郷土博物館、民族博物館、劇場があり、泥浴(でいよく)療養地としても知られる、文教・保養都市である。
