"Kasuga Kaishi"

...Many waka poems have been written on the "Waka Kaishi" since the end of the Heian period, but the most famous are the "Ipponkyo Waka Kaishi" (late Heian period) by Saigyo, Fujiwara no Yorisuke, and others, and the "Kumano Kaishi" (1198-1199) written by Emperor Gotoba and his close associates on his pilgrimage to the Kumano Sanzan. The "Kasuga Kaishi" (Kamakura period) written by the priests of Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine in Nara and people associated with the shrine is known for having the "Manyoshu" written on the back of the paper. The oldest renga kaishi was found in the mid-Kamakura period, and it was usually bound with mizuhiki and writing started immediately on the cover, a style that was passed down to haiku and continued until the Edo period.

…和歌を書いた〈和歌懐紙〉は平安末期から多くの作品が伝存するが，西行，藤原頼輔らの《一品経和歌懐紙》(平安末)，後鳥羽天皇が熊野三山に参詣した折(1198∥建久9)，路すがら供奉の近臣たちと催した和歌会の《熊野懐紙》などが名高い。また奈良春日若宮の神官と若宮ゆかりの人々による《春日懐紙》(鎌倉時代)は，紙背に《万葉集》が書写されていることで知られる。連歌懐紙は鎌倉中期に最古のものがみられ，水引でとじ，表紙からただちに書き始めることが普通であり，俳諧にもうけつがれて江戸時代まで書式，形式が続いた。…
