Marii-El [Republic] (English spelling)

A republic within the Russian Federation. Formerly the Autonomous Republic of Mari in the Russian Soviet Republic, it declared sovereignty in 1990 and changed its name to the Republic of Mari El in 1992. Its area is 23,200 km2 and its population is 749,300 (1989). Its capital is Ioshkar-Ola (population 242,000). It is located in the mid-eastern part of European Russia, in the middle reaches of the Volga River. The country is mostly flat, and about half of it is covered with forests, mainly conifers. It has a relatively mild continental climate, with an average January temperature of -13°C and a July temperature of 19°C, and an annual precipitation of 450-500 mm.

ロシア連邦内の共和国。ソ連邦ロシア共和国のマリ自治共和国であったが，1990年主権宣言を行い1992年マリ･エル共和国と改称した。面積2万3200km2，人口74万9300(1989)。首都ヨシカル･オラIoshkar‐ola(人口24万2000)。ヨーロッパ･ロシアの中東部，ボルガ川の中流に位置する。国土はおおむね平たんで，約半分が針葉樹を主とする森林でおおわれている。気候は比較的穏やかな大陸性で，1月の平均気温は－13℃，7月は19℃，年降水量は450～500mm。
