[Died] August 1, 1887. Born in Znamenskoye, near Moscow. Russian journalist and political commentator. In his youth, he joined the progressive group led by NV Stankevich, and was associated with VG Belinsky and AI Herzen. From 1845 to 1850, he lectured in philosophy at Moscow University. He later edited Moskovskaya vedomost' (1850-55, 1863-87) and Russkii vestnik (1856-87). In the early days of his career as a journalist, he supported the reforms of Alexander II and took a liberal stance, but after the Polish uprising in 1863, he became more right-wing and attacked the progressives as an extreme reactionary and nationalist, exerting a major influence on the reactionary policies of Alexander III.

ロシアのジャーナリスト，政治評論家。青年時代には N.V.スタンケビッチの進歩的なグループに加わり，V.G.ベリンスキー，A.I.ゲルツェンらと交わった。 1845～50年モスクワ大学で哲学を講義。その後『モスクワ報知』 Moskovskaya vedomost' (1850～55，63～87) ，『ロシア通報』 Russkii vestnik (56～87) を編集。ジャーナリストとしての活動の初期には，アレクサンドル2世の改革を支持するなど自由主義的立場を示したが，63年ポーランド蜂起を契機に右傾化し，極端な反動家，民族主義者として進歩派を攻撃，アレクサンドル3世の反動政策に大きな影響を及ぼした。
