...A nuclear reactor in which the chain reaction of nuclear fission is mainly caused by fast neutrons, and more fissile material is produced by conversion in the process than is lost in the chain reaction. The possibility of a fast breeder reactor was pointed out by E. Fermi and Walter H. Zinn during the Manhattan Project, and the EBR-I experimental breeder reactor, which Zinn planned from around 1946, was completed in 1951. This reactor has a core of 235 U fuel surrounded by a blanket of 238 U, and is cooled by the liquid metal NaK (an alloy of sodium and potassium).
