1755‐93 Queen of France. Born in Vienna as the daughter of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, she married the Dauphin of France (who became King Louis XVI in 1774) in 1770. Blessed with beauty and intelligence, she was dissatisfied with her husband, who was good but lacking in talent, and caused several scandals that caused him to lose the trust of the people. When the French Revolution began, she encouraged her undecided husband to oppose the revolution, and became the center of counter-revolutionary intrigues at court.
