As of the end of March 1996, there were 169 railway operators (excluding JR) operating 6,885.9 km of track, and 30 operators operating 446.8 km of track, for a total of 181 operators operating 7,332.7 km (18 of these operators operate both local railways and track). These include specially designed railways, such as funicular railways (cable cars) operating 24.0 km by 22 operators, suspended railways and straddle-type railways (monorails) operating 31.4 km by 6 operators, guide-rail railways (rubber-tired so-called new transit systems, etc.) operating 79.1 km by 8 operators, and trackless trains (trolley buses) operating 6.1 km by 1 operator. In addition, there are 188 lines and 302.6 km of regular cableways (ropeways), 172 lines and 73.3 km of Class A special cableways (summer mountain lifts), 2,770 lines and 1,720.2 km of Class B special cableways (ski lifts), and 43 lines and 18.6 km of Class C special cableways (ski tows).
