1833‐1908 A modern Iranian reformist. Born into an Armenian family in Isfahan, he converted to Islam. In 1843, he studied in France, and after returning to Iran he founded and was active in a Freemason organization, for which he was exiled in 1861. He stayed in Istanbul until 1872, where he was influenced by constitutional thought. In 1873, he was lifted from exile and appointed chargé d'affaires in London. After being dismissed in 1889, he founded the newspaper "Qanun" and criticized the Iranian government. He died in Switzerland in 1908.
