A branch of Catholic theology that seeks to define and clarify the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, in the incarnation (Christ becoming human as God) and the redemption and salvation of humankind. This branch begins with dogmas established and defined by several churches, and then elucidates and develops them in more detail. Topics covered include Mary's motherhood of God, her virginity as a mother, the Immaculate Conception, in which Mary was freed from the stain of original sin at her birth in anticipation of the grace of Christ who would be born of her, and the Assumption, in which Mary was taken up into heaven, both body and soul, after her earthly life (the latter two were declared definitive in 1854 and 1950, respectively).

カトリック神学の一部門。イエス･キリストの母マリアの役割を，キリストの受肉(神であるキリストが人間になること)と人類の罪の贖いと救済のなかで神学的に規定し，その意義をきわめようとするもの。この部門はいくつかの教会によって決定･定義された教義を出発点にして，マリアの役割をさらにくわしく解明し，その教義を展開する。扱われる主題は，マリアが神の母であること，母であるが処女であったとするマリアの処女性，彼女から生まれるキリストの恵みを先取りする形で，マリアはその誕生のさい原罪のけがれをまぬかれたとする無原罪のやどり，地上の生涯の後マリアは霊魂と身体とも天の栄光にあげられたとする被昇天などである(後の二つはそれぞれ1854年，1950年に教義決定宣言がなされた)。
