Uemura Shoen

Japanese:
Uemura Shoen

A Japanese painter. His real name was Tsune. He was born in Kyoto on April 23, 1875. In 1887 (Meiji 20), he entered the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and studied under Suzuki Shonen, but dropped out the following year to enter the Shonen School, where he studied under Kono Bairei and then Takeuchi Seiho. His painting "Four Seasons of Beauties" won an award at the 3rd Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1890, and he continued to exhibit at the Japan Art Association, the Japan Youth Painting Exhibition, and other exhibitions, opening up a unique realm in the field of bijin-ga. His paintings gained fame when "Long Night" won third prize at the 1st Bunten Exhibition in 1907 (Meiji 40), and "Moonlight Shadow" won third prize at the 2nd Bunten the following year. His paintings won second prize at the 9th Bunten Exhibition in 1915 (Taisho 4), and he was promoted to permanent non-examination the following year. In 1924, she was appointed as a member of the Teiten Committee, in 1934 (Showa 9), as an associate of the Teiten Exhibition, and in 1941, as a member of the Imperial Art Academy. In 1948 (Showa 23), she became the first woman to receive the Order of Culture, but passed away the following year, on August 28, 1949, at a mountain villa in Heijo Village, Nara Prefecture (now Nara City), where she had evacuated. Her style of painting was based on the traditions of the Shijo school, but with a modern sensibility. She continued to paint fresh works with women of good families or townspeople as the subject, and we can see a change from the emotional expression of her early period to the intellectual expression of her later period. Representative works of her early period include the two works exhibited in the early Bunten exhibitions mentioned above, as well as "Flame" and "Musume Miyuki," and her later works include "Mother and Child," "Introductory Dance," "Snow, Moon, and Flowers," "Evening Dusk," and "Late Autumn." The Japanese painter Uemura Shoko (real name Shintaro) was her own son.
