?-1014 Emperor of the First Bulgarian Empire. Reigned 997-1014. Son of a provincial governor. When eastern Bulgaria fell to the Byzantine Empire in 971, he continued his resistance from Ohrid in western Bulgaria, recapturing the occupied territories (976) and later becoming emperor. He invaded the Peloponnese and the Adriatic coast for a time, striving to maintain independence and expand his territory, but was defeated by the Byzantine army of Basil II in 1014 and died suddenly.
