Born on August 9, 1877. Became a professor at his alma mater, Waseda University, in 1908, lecturing on Chinese language and the history of diplomacy in the Far East. From 1914, he served as an advisor to Yuan Shikai, President of the Republic of China, for two years. Died on January 8, 1951, aged 73. Born in Yamagata Prefecture. His pen name was Ryu Shiren.
