Federation of Malaya - Malayarenpo (English spelling) Federation of Malaya
Predecessor state of the Federation of Malaysia
Britain, which had been colonizing the region since the beginning of the 19th century, organized the various princely states into the Federated Malay States in 1895 and made it a British colony. During the Pacific War, it was under Japanese occupation, but after the war it was a British colony from 1948 to 1957, and in 1957 it became an independent state within the British Commonwealth, calling itself the Federation of Malaya, with Rahman as its prime minister. Singapore also became a self-governing state within the British Commonwealth in 1959. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya and Singapore united with Sarawak and Sabah in British Borneo to form the Federation of Malaysia. In 1965, Singapore separated from the Federation of Malaysia and became independent.
