The term "slaves" refers to the soldiers, officials, and court attendants who served directly under the Sultan during the Ottoman Empire. These people were made up of deusirme and prisoners of war. Although they were technically "slaves" of the Sultan, they formed a part of the privileged ruling class in Ottoman society.
