It is the language of the Shan people in Shan State, Burma (Myanmar). It is one of the Tai languages. It is close to the Khamti language of northern Burma and Assam. It is characterized by the loss of liquid consonants at the beginning of words. It uses Burmese characters. In a broad sense, it includes the Chinese Shan language of Yunnan.
