Born: March 3, 1877 in Tokyo
[Died] September 7, 1951. Nagano poet and calligrapher. Real name: Saburo. Calligraphy name: Mitani. Haiku name: Kasatani. After dropping out of Tokyo Prefectural First Middle School, he studied waka, Japanese classical Chinese, and calligraphy. In 1898, he visited Masaoka Shiki and participated in the founding of the Negishi Tanka Society. After Shiki's death, he became a member of the Ashibi group, but gradually moved away from composing poetry. He later returned to Araragi (1916), and developed his own unique realm of poetry rich in nuances by adding a modern aesthetic sense to the Manyo style. In his later years after evacuating to Nagano Prefecture, he wrote many profound masterpieces that focus on the sorrows of life. He taught many students as a calligrapher at Sacred Heart Girls' School (13-44) and the Tokugawa Family Library (13-43). He has published seven collections of poems, including "Niwa Moss" (25) and "Ozasao" (47). In 1949, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy.

歌人，書家。本名，三郎。書号，三谷。俳号，傘谷。東京府立第一中学校中退後，和歌，国漢文，書を習い，1898年正岡子規をたずねて「根岸短歌会」の創始に参与。子規没後『馬酔木 (あしび) 』同人となったが次第に作歌から遠ざかり，その後『アララギ』に復活 (1916) ，以後万葉調に近世風の美意識を加味して，独自の陰影に富む歌境を開拓した。長野県に疎開してからの晩年には，人生の悲痛を凝視した深みのある秀作が多い。聖心女子学院 (13～44) ，徳川家文庫 (13～43) などで書家として多くの門人を教えた。『庭苔』 (25) ，『小笹生』 (47) など7歌集がある。 1949年芸術院会員。
