Italian painter. Also known as C. Maratti. Born in Camerano near Ancona. Studied under A. Sacchi in Rome. A typical late Baroque virtuoso who combined the classicism of N. Poussin with the eloquent composition of Pietro da Cortona. Italian art historian GC Argand describes him as a painter who "transformed Baroque oratory into mere preaching ingenuity." His religious paintings, which make full use of light and shade and sfumato, are strongly colored with sentimentalism and approach the sensibility of French Rococo.
