A Passage to India

A full-length novel by British author E.M. Forster. Published in 1924. A young Englishman, Ronnie, who works as a judge in Chandrapore, a city in India under the British Empire, is visited by his mother, Mrs. Moore, and Ronnie's fiancee, Adela Quested. A young Indian doctor, Aziz, is impressed by the two, who try to understand India fairly without racial prejudice, and takes them to see a cave. However, Adela, who has doubts about marrying Ronnie, becomes confused by the mysterious echoes in the cave and believes that Aziz has almost raped her, and accuses him. The doctor and the townspeople claim innocence, while the English claim guilt, and the town becomes tense with the conflict between the two. This masterpiece explores the essence and limits of human love, intellect and emotion, politics and morality, against the backdrop of the conflict between different cultures, between the order of the West and the chaotic East.
