Shibata [city] - Shibata
A city in northern Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1947. The city center is located in the northern part of the Echigo Plain, and developed as a castle town of the Shibata Domain in the early modern period. Since an infantry regiment was stationed there in 1884, it has developed as a military city, and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force is currently stationed here. The city is served by the Uetsu Main Line and the Hakushin Line. It is the main producer of Koshihikari rice, one of the best quality rice in the prefecture, and fruit and vegetable cultivation is also carried out in the surrounding area. It is a commercial city that distributes agricultural products, and has industries such as electrical equipment, brewing, and food. The eastern part of the city is the western slope of Mt. Iide, which belongs to Bandai-Asahi National Park, and has hot springs such as Yunohira Onsen and Tsukioka Onsen. In July 2003, Toyoura Town, Kitakanbara County, was incorporated. In May 2005, Shiunji Town and Kajikawa Village, Kitakanbara County, were incorporated. 533.10 km2 . Population: 101,202 (2010).

新潟県北部の市。1947年市制。中心市街は越後平野北部にあり,近世は新発田藩の城下町として発達した。1884年歩兵連隊がおかれて以後は軍都として発展,現在は陸上自衛隊が駐屯。羽越本線,白新線が通じる。県内有数の良質米コシヒカリの主産地で,周辺では果樹・野菜栽培も行われる。農産物集散の商業都市であり,電気機器,醸造,食品などの工業がある。東部は磐梯朝日国立公園に属する飯豊山(いいでさん)の西斜面で,湯ノ平温泉や月岡温泉などがある。2003年7月,北蒲原(きたかんばら)郡豊浦町を編入。2005年5月北蒲原郡紫雲寺町,加治川村を編入。533.10km2。10万1202人(2010)。
