A mountain in the Andes, located in western Peru, South America, about 350 km north of Lima. It is the highest mountain in Peru, and consists of the South Peak (6,768 m) and the North Peak (6,655 m). The North Peak was first climbed in 1908, and the South Peak in 1932. Condors, pumas, spectacled bears, and other creatures live there. Huascarán National Park was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985. During the 1970 Peruvian earthquake, a glacier on the west side collapsed, killing about 20,000 people.
