Located in central Sumatra, Indonesia, this is the largest oil field in Southeast Asia. It was discovered by a Japanese oil unit in 1944 (Showa 19) during World War II, and is currently produced by Caltex. The average oil depth is about 700 meters, with total recoverable reserves estimated at about 640 million kiloliters and daily production of about 47,000 kiloliters (1984). Minas crude oil is also in high demand as a pollution control measure, as it is a low-sulfur crude oil with a sulfur content of 0.1%, and the Sumatra light crude oil imported by Japan is mainly made up of Minas crude oil.
