Born in Gyeongseong, Korea on January 4, 1925. After working as a professor at Kanazawa University and other institutions, he became a professor at Kyushu University in 1974. He later became a professor at Toyama University of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He elucidated the regulatory mechanisms of hunger and satiety at the neural circuit level. In 1990, he served as chairman of the International Society for the Study of Obesity. In 1988, he received the Japan Academy Prize. He graduated from Kyushu Imperial University.
