Maputo (English spelling)

Maputo (English spelling)
The capital of Mozambique. Formerly called Lourenço Marques. A port city located in southern Mozambique, facing Maputo Bay in the Indian Ocean. In 1544, Portuguese merchant Lourenço Marques explored the city, and in 1787 a Portuguese fortress was built there. In 1907, it became the capital of Portuguese East Africa, and in 1976 it was renamed Maputo. The port is the largest on the east coast of Africa, and was once used as an import/export port for gold from South Africa, Eswatini, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and other countries. It was also popular as a resort town due to its good climate, but after Mozambique's independence in 1975, relations with neighboring countries deteriorated, and the port and tourism industries were hit hard. Brewing, shipbuilding, cement, canning, textiles, and other industries are thriving, and the city and port have been expanded repeatedly as commerce and industry developed, becoming a modern city. It has an international airport, a university, a natural history museum, a cathedral, and a public hall. Population: 1,122,000 (2009).
