Located in Itoman City, at the southern tip of Okinawa Island (the main island) in Okinawa Prefecture, this hilly area is made up of a sloping massif of Ryukyu limestone. The southern end is a sea cliff 88m above sea level, and from there it slopes gently north. This was the site of the final fierce battle of the Battle of Okinawa in World War II, and the headquarters and field hospital were located in the limestone caves, where many casualties occurred. Near the summit are the Tower of Dawn and Tower of Healthy Children, as well as a number of memorial towers for war dead from prefectures and organizations, making it a Peace Memorial Park. It is part of the Okinawa Battlefield Quasi-National Park. [Doumae Ryohei] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
