This is the former town area of Takashima City in the northwest of Shiga Prefecture, in the central-southern part of the city. It is located in the middle and lower reaches of the Azumi River, and consists of alluvial plateaus in the northwest and west, and alluvial plains in the east. In 1954, the four towns and villages of Azumi, Hirose, Aoyagi, and Honjo merged to form Azumigawa Town. In 2005, it merged with the five towns and villages of Makino, Imazu, Kutsuki, Takashima, and Shinasahi to form Takashima City. Rice is the main crop, and the town is known for its fan ribs, which are used to make Kyoto folding fans. Takashima inkstones and Unpei brushes are also well known. The textile industry is also active. Tanaka, the central settlement, developed after the Kojaku Railway Station was opened in 1929. Minami-Funaki, in the lower reaches, was a lumber market during the Muromachi period, and was a distribution center for lumber sent down the Azumi River. Kitafunagi is home to a Mikuriya restaurant, which has the privilege of engaging in river fishing. Even today, small sweetfish and lotus are caught in traps. The stream is home to the remains of Nakae Toju's Toju Shoin (a nationally designated historic site) and Toju Shrine. The eastern shore of Lake Biwa is part of Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park, and the upper reaches of the Azumi River belong to the Kutsuki-Katsura River Prefectural Natural Park.AzumigawaSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
