Azumigawa

Japanese: 安曇川 - あどがわ
Azumigawa
This is the former town area of Takashima City in the northwest of Shiga Prefecture, in the central-southern part of the city. It is located in the middle and lower reaches of the Azumi River, and consists of alluvial plateaus in the northwest and west, and alluvial plains in the east. In 1954, the four towns and villages of Azumi, Hirose, Aoyagi, and Honjo merged to form Azumigawa Town. In 2005, it merged with the five towns and villages of Makino, Imazu, Kutsuki, Takashima, and Shinasahi to form Takashima City. Rice is the main crop, and the town is known for its fan ribs, which are used to make Kyoto folding fans. Takashima inkstones and Unpei brushes are also well known. The textile industry is also active. Tanaka, the central settlement, developed after the Kojaku Railway Station was opened in 1929. Minami-Funaki, in the lower reaches, was a lumber market during the Muromachi period, and was a distribution center for lumber sent down the Azumi River. Kitafunagi is home to a Mikuriya restaurant, which has the privilege of engaging in river fishing. Even today, small sweetfish and lotus are caught in traps. The stream is home to the remains of Nakae Toju's Toju Shoin (a nationally designated historic site) and Toju Shrine. The eastern shore of Lake Biwa is part of Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park, and the upper reaches of the Azumi River belong to the Kutsuki-Katsura River Prefectural Natural Park.

Azumigawa

A river in the west of Shiga Prefecture. It originates near Hanase Pass and Momoi Pass in Kyoto Prefecture, flows north along the Hanaori Fault (→ Hanaori Pass) on the west side of the Hira Mountains in the valley of Kutsuki in the southwest of Takashima City, joins the Harihata River and Aso River along the way, flows east, forms a delta at the mouth of the river, and empties into the west shore of Lake Biwa. The total length is 58 km. It is the largest river on the west side of the lake. National Route 367 runs upstream to Kyoto. During the Edo period, timber from the upper reaches was washed down from Kutsuki and collected in Funaki at the mouth of the river. Bamboo from the bamboo grove on the midstream bank was used for fan ribs, and the Yanari fishing method downstream is known as a unique fishing method. Kita-Funaki at the mouth of the river is a major fishing area for small sweetfish for release. The upper reaches belong to the Kutsuki-Katsura River Prefectural Natural Park.
