The sandy coastline stretches for about 70 km from Oarai to the mouth of the Tone River in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. In the northern half, the Kashima Plateau approaches the coast, and a narrow sandy coastline continues below gentle sea cliffs. The Kashima Sand Dunes, which stretch from Kashima City to Kamisu City in the southern half, are some of the largest in Japan, with a height of 30 to 40 m and a width of 2 to 3 km. The sea is relatively shallow, and beach seine fishing was once popular, but this has now been replaced by agri-ami fishing using large motorized boats. Fishing for clams and saury is carried out along the coast. The Kashima Rinkai Industrial Area was formed around the Kashima Industrial Port, which straddles Kamisu City and Kashima City, and the area has changed significantly with industrialization. Agriculture in the sand dune area has also shifted from peanuts and sweet potatoes to greenhouse horticulture, producing peppers, melons, cucumbers, and other crops.

茨城県南東部，大洗から利根川河口まで約 70kmの砂浜海岸。北半部では鹿島台地が海岸に迫り，ゆるやかな海食崖下に狭い砂浜海岸が続く。南半部の鹿嶋市から神栖市にいたる鹿島砂丘は，日本でも有数の大砂丘で，高さ 30～40m，幅2～3kmに及ぶ。海は比較的遠浅で，かつては地引網漁業が盛んであったが，大型動力船による揚繰網 (あぐりあみ) に代わった。沿岸ではハマグリ，ウバガイなどの漁業が行なわれる。神栖市と鹿嶋市にまたがる鹿島工業港を中心に，鹿島臨海工業地域が形成され，工業化に伴う地域の変貌が著しい。砂丘地域の農業も，ラッカセイ，サツマイモ中心からピーマン，プリンスメロン，キュウリなどの施設園芸に転じた。
