Free piston gas turbine

A type of hybrid prime mover that combines a diesel engine and a gas turbine. As shown in the figure, a two-stroke uniflow opposed-piston diesel engine is used as a gas generator, and the gas is expanded by a gas turbine to produce power. Since no power is produced from the diesel engine, there is no crankshaft or connecting rod, and the two pistons are always kept moving in opposite directions by a linked synchronizer, but there is nothing else to restrain the pistons, so they can move freely, so they are called free-piston gas generators.

ディーゼルエンジンとガスタービンとを組み合わせた複合型原動機の一種。図に示したように2サイクル･ユニフロー対向ピストン型ディーゼルエンジンをガス発生器として使用し，このガスをガスタービンで膨張させて動力を取り出すものである。ディーゼルエンジン側からは動力は取り出さないのでクランク軸や連接棒はなく，二つのピストンはリンク式の同期装置でつねに反対向きに動くようにするが，そのほかにピストンを拘束するものはなく自由に動きうるので，これをフリーピストンガス発生器という。
