A state in western India. It has an area of 308,000 km2 and a population of 78.94 million (1991). The state capital is Bombay (Mumbai). The state's name means "Land of the Marathas," and as a historical place name it refers to the area between the upper reaches of the Godavari River and the upper reaches of the Krishna River in the northwestern part of the Deccan Plateau. It has a long history, with the Satavahana dynasty from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD, the Rashtrakuta dynasty from the 8th to 10th centuries, the Kakatiya dynasty from the 12th to 14th centuries, and the Bahmani dynasty from the 14th to 16th centuries all based here. インド西部の州。面積30万8000km2,人口7894万(1991)。州都はボンベイ(ムンバイー)。州名は〈マラーターの国〉の意で,歴史地名としてはデカン高原北西部のうち,ゴーダーバリー川上流域とクリシュナー川上流域との間の地帯をいう。歴史は古く,前1~後3世紀のサータバーハナ朝,8~10世紀のラーシュトラクータ朝,12~14世紀のカーカティーヤ朝,14~16世紀のバフマニー朝などは,いずれもここを根拠地とした。
