Slash-and-burn farming is the cultivation of foxtail millet, buckwheat, beans, etc. in the area where forests have been burned. After three to four years of cultivation, the land is abandoned and moved to another location. Slash-and-burn farming has been widely practiced since ancient times, from the Tohoku region to the Kyushu region. The scene of lumber fields scattered in patches on the mountain slopes resembles a kanoko pattern, so some places are called kanoko fields, kanou fields, or kanon fields. There are also many cases of cedar trees being planted on the land where lumber fields had been cultivated. Some forest owners even had cedar trees planted in exchange for the lumber fields.
