Benioff, H.

...This occurs when one of the convergent boundaries of two plates is on the ocean floor. It was first discovered in 1928 by Kiyoo Wadati as a deep earthquake surface that slopes from the ocean trench to under the land, and in 1954, Hugo Benioff of the United States compiled examples from around the world, so it is also called the Wadati-Benioff zone or simply the Benioff zone. Later, research into the mechanism of earthquakes showed that the hard ocean floor lithosphere bends under the ocean trench and sinks deep into the mantle while rubbing against the land crust.
