A village in Yuki County, western Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 9,351 (1995). The Kinugawa River runs through the center, and the Kokai River flows south along the eastern border. The eastern half of the village is lowland, while the western half is a plateau. The central settlement, Soudo, was a key location for water transportation along the Kinugawa River until the Meiji period, and flourished as a distribution center for goods in the Shimodate and Tsukuba areas. Mulberry cultivation was once popular, but today rice and vegetable production is the main focus. The Tsukuba Circuit, which is part of the Japan Auto Sports Center, is located here. 茨城県西部,結城郡の村。人口9351(1995)。中央を鬼怒川,東境を小貝川が南流し,東半部が低地,西半部が台地となる。中心集落の宗道(そうどう)は明治時代まで鬼怒川水運の要地で,下館,筑波一帯の物資の集散地として栄えた。かつては桑の栽培が盛んであったが,現在は米作と野菜生産が中心となっている。日本オートスポーツセンターの筑波サーキットがある。関東鉄道常総線,国道294号線が通じる。【千葉 立也】
