Otemoyan

Japanese:
Otemoyan

A folk song from Kumamoto Prefecture. It was originally a noisy song sung by entertainment circles all over the country, but was brought to Higo Kumamoto, where the lyrics were written in the local dialect and it was called "Kumamoto Jinku." Later, it was thought it would be more interesting to use the opening line of the song as the title, so it became "Otemoyan." The "yan" in "Otemoyan" corresponds to the "san" in "Mr. So-and-so." In the first stanza, when "Otemoyan" is asked how she feels about getting married, she gives a humorous reply in the local dialect. After Akasaka Koume recorded it on a record in 1936 (Showa 11), it spread nationwide, and dance choreography was added. Its fast tempo and cheerful nature make it popular with a wide range of people.
