Japanese: 妻訪い - つまどい

A husband and wife do not live together, but visit the wife's family home. There are two types of wife-visiting marriage: one in which the husband and wife visit the wife for the rest of their lives, and one in which the husband visits the wife temporarily at the beginning of the marriage, and the wife later moves to the husband's family home and lives with him. There was once a special case in the large family system of Shirakawa Village, Gifu Prefecture, where all men except the eldest son continued to visit their wives for the rest of their lives (this disappeared in the 1920s), but most of Japan's current folk customs are the latter type of temporary wife-visiting marriage, which was widespread in the Izu Islands, the Shima region, the Seto Inland Sea coast, the western islands of Kyushu, and the Nansei Islands.

夫妻が同居せず妻方の婚舎（こんしや）に夫が通うこと。妻訪いによる婚姻には，終生夫妻不同居で妻訪いをおこなうものと，婚姻初期に一時的に妻訪いをおこない，後に妻が夫方に引き移り同居するものとがある。かつて岐阜県白川村の大家族制において，長男以外の男子が生涯妻訪いを続けたという特殊例はあったが(1920年代に消滅)，日本の現行民俗のほとんどは後者の一時的妻訪婚としての妻訪いで，伊豆諸島，志摩地方，瀬戸内海沿岸，九州西方離島，南西諸島の諸地域に広く存在した。
