Ogawa Kashin

A tea master from the late Edo period. A doctor. The founder of the Ogawa school of tea. A native of Kyoto. His name was Hironobu. He also went by the pen names of Kashin and Koraku. He initially studied medicine under Ogino Taishu, then took over the family business and established a family. At the age of 50, he suddenly gave up the business, devoted himself to tea, and founded the Ogawa school. He devised a rational method of making tea. His teachings are detailed in "Kissaben," which was transcribed by Tachibana Moromi from what he dictated on his sickbed in 1854 (Ansei 1) and published on the third anniversary of his death. <References> Ogawa Koraku, "Cultural History of Tea"

江戸後期の煎茶家。医者。煎茶小川流の祖。京都の人。名は弘宣。可進,後楽と号した。はじめ荻野台州に医を学んで家業を継ぎ,一家を立てる。50歳にして突如廃業し,煎茶に専念して小川流を開いた。合理的な煎茶法を工夫した。安政1(1854)年病床で口述したものを橘諸見が筆記し,没後三回忌に板行された『喫茶弁』に,その内容が詳しい。<参考文献>小川後楽『茶の文化史』
