This is a collection of poems written in the youth of German lyric poet Heine that made him famous all over the world. Published in 1827. The translators who introduced this work to Japan were Mori Ogai and Inoue Shozo. Heine, while inheriting the tradition of German romanticism, develops various beautiful variations on the theme of the pain of unrequited love (Young Sorrows, Lyrical Intermezzo, Return Home). However, the poet senses a "crack in the world" in his heart, and tries to release his "world pain" toward the "modern Trojan War" (From the Voyage of Haartz). From this was born a series of bold free-rhythmic poems (North Sea), which are unparalleled in modern German poetry. It can be said that this was the young Heine's ambitious first step in innovating the tradition of German romanticism.
