A province in south-central Canada. It is part of the stable Canadian Shield, and its northeast faces Hudson Bay. It is subject to significant glacial erosion, but has little relief, and the south has many lakes, including Lake Winnipeg. The south is a rich agricultural region, mainly producing wheat. The northeast is barren, but the central part is covered with coniferous forests, and the lumber and pulp industries have developed. It is also rich in underground resources, such as nickel, gold, zinc, copper, and oil. It was originally owned by the Hudson's Bay Company, but in 1869 it was handed over to the Dominion of Canada. In response, the Métis, a French-speaking population, established a provisional government with L. Riel as their leader and protested. After negotiations, their demands, including the protection of French culture, were granted, and in 1870 it became a province of the Dominion of Canada, called Manitoba. The provincial capital, Winnipeg, is a transit point for immigrants from many countries, giving it a strong international character. Its area is 553,556 km2 . 1,208,268 people (2011). → Related article Winnipegosis [Lake] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
