A representative religious poet and mystic of Shaivism in medieval South India, he lived around the 9th century. He was at the apex of the Bhakti (devotional) movement that flourished in South India from the 6th century onwards. His works include Tirukkōvaiyār, which uses the techniques of Tamil love poetry to depict love between gods and humans, and Tiruvācakam, which has as its theme bhakti to Shiva. 中世南インドのシバ教の代表的宗教詩人で神秘思想家。9世紀ころの人。6世紀以降に南インドで栄えたバクティ(信愛)運動の頂点に位置する。作品には,タミル文学の恋愛詩の技法を用いて神と人間との愛を描いた《ティルコーバイヤールTirukkōvaiyār》と,シバへのバクティを主題とする《ティルバーサガムTiruvācakam》があり,ともにシバ教の聖典《ティルムライTirumurai》(11世紀後半に完成)に収められている。
