The Act that established Manitoba's accession to the Dominion of Canada in May 1870. Its prototype was the "Declaration of the Rights of the Métis," which the Provisional Government of the Red River Colony petitioned to the Canadian government on January 25, 1870. This included provisions for the use of both English and French in public affairs, financial assistance, and the protection of "all property, rights, and privileges enjoyed by the inhabitants of this province." The Act of Manitoba added a system of public schools (segregated schools) that allowed Catholic education. [Ohara Yuko] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
