Sasagami [Village] - Sasagami

Japanese: 笹神[村] - ささかみ

A village in Kitakanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 9,740 (1995). Comprised of the eastern Echigo Plain, the foothills of the Gozu mountain range, and the plains south of the Fukushimagata lagoon, it is an agricultural and mountain village with about half of the village area covered in rice paddies and a little over 30% in forests. Rice is the main crop, and organic and low-pesticide vegetables are cultivated, but in 1993, a cold wind caused great damage. The Gozu mountain range has been designated a prefectural natural park, and is a recreational area for visitors from the Niigata City and Shibata City directions. In 1993, part of Niigata Russian Village was opened. At the foot of the mountain are the long-established Deyu Onsen (simple spring, 39-42°C), Imaita Onsen (pure salt spring, 24°C), and Murasugi Onsen (simple spring, 28°C), and tourism development is also underway.

新潟県中部，北蒲原郡の村。人口9740(1995)。越後平野東部，五頭（ごず）連峰山麓部と福島潟南方の平野部からなり，村域の約半分を水田，3割強を山林が占める農山村である。米作を中心に有機･低農薬野菜の栽培を行うが，1993年には冷風害により多大な被害が生じた。五頭連峰は県立自然公園に指定され，新潟市，新発田市方面からのレクリエーション地となっており，93年には新潟ロシア村の一部がオープンした。山麓には歴史の古い出湯（でゆ）温泉(単純泉，39～42℃)，今板温泉(純食塩泉，24℃)，村杉温泉(単純泉，28℃)があり，観光開発も進められている。
