Shojo

Japanese: 猩々 - しょうじょう
Shojo
Title of a Noh piece, Japanese music, or Japanese dance. (1) Noh: A Noh piece with an unknown author. A man living in the village of Yangzi in China is led by a dream to sell sake in the market when a Shojo appears and, in recognition of the man's filial piety, gives him a bottle of sake that never runs dry and dances with him. The highlight of the piece is the dance of the Shojo, a fairy in the form of a cute young boy. (→ Ono Noh) (2) Nagauta: This piece was first performed in 1820 at the Nakamuraza Theater in Edo as one of the seven transformations, under the original title "Shojo Yuki no Eizame." Bando Mitsugoro III danced the role of a drunk Shojo on a snowy beach. In 1874, a new choreography was written for a supporting piece by the same company at the Kawarazaki Theater, and it was performed as the Matsubamokumono "Kotobuki Futari Shojo." This is the extant version of "Futari Shojo." In addition, there is a jiuta song known as "Onna Shojo," which depicts a prostitute stacking cups of sake, and in the Icchu-bushi genre there remains a song of the same name composed by Miyako Kazukiyo in 1855.
