Lake Wakatipu (English spelling)

Japanese: ワカティプ[湖]（英語表記）Lake Wakatipu

It is one of the glacial lakes in the southwest of New Zealand's South Island. With an area of 293 km2, it is the second largest in the South Island after Lake Te Anau. The water surface is 310m above sea level and 378m deep. It is located to the east of Lake Te Anau and is long and narrow, with a curved shape. The town of Queenstown (population approx. 2,600) and its airport are located in the center of the lake on the eastern shore, making it a tourist hub. The lake water flows out east from here as the Kawarau River (a tributary of the Clutha River). The name is derived from Maori. [Taniuchi Tatsu]

ニュージーランド南島南西部の氷食湖群の一つ。面積293km2で，南島ではテ･アナウ湖に次ぐ。水面標高310m，水深378m。テ･アナウ湖の東にあり，細長く屈曲している。湖の中央東岸にクイーンズタウンの町(人口約2600)と空港があり，観光の拠点となっている。湖水はここから東へカワラウ川(クルーサ川の支流)として流れ出している。名称はマオリ語に由来する。【谷内達】
