It is one of the glacial lakes in the southwest of New Zealand's South Island. With an area of 293 km2, it is the second largest in the South Island after Lake Te Anau. The water surface is 310m above sea level and 378m deep. It is located to the east of Lake Te Anau and is long and narrow, with a curved shape. The town of Queenstown (population approx. 2,600) and its airport are located in the center of the lake on the eastern shore, making it a tourist hub. The lake water flows out east from here as the Kawarau River (a tributary of the Clutha River). The name is derived from Maori.
