Balenciaga - Balenciaga (English spelling) Christobal Balenciaga

Spanish-born fashion designer. One of the most representative creators of the 20th century, along with Poiret and Chanel. He gained fame with a shop called "EiSa" in Barcelona and other places, but fled to Paris during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. The shop he opened on Avenue Georges V was a huge success, and thereafter, with his elegant style that blended Spanish boldness with Parisian elegance, he reigned over the world of fashion as a "master of haute couture." The simple forms supported by perfect technique, such as the innovative tent dress and cacoon coat that he introduced in the 1950s, continue to influence many designers today. He retired after his Spring/Summer 1968 collection.
